Elk/Deer all seasons hunting summary:
This year we had 7 Mule Deer hunters with tags and all took home some nice Mule Deer bucks. We had one hunter, Doodle, from WV, take the largest to date Mule Deer on any or our Ranches. He is still waiting for the required drying period to officially score. Early estimates from the hunters in camp is it will score in the high 190’s.
Elk hunters had an awesome year, with a lot of Elk sightings and shot opportunities from Muzzleloading through the 4th Rifle season. Our repeat Elk hunters continued to have great success taking home some elk meat for the winter months ahead. Congrats has to go to Brady, a youth in camp this year, from WV, who took a nice Mule Deer Buck and a Nice Bull Elk. Dr. Roberts and Jared from WV made some long shots and took their first ever Bull Elk in Colorado. Tom’s son Matt who is an active duty Naval Officer, only had 3 days off to hunt with his father and Grandfather Carl. Matt scored a nice Mule Deer Buck but was unable to get a Bull Elk this year. Ed and Eric from Wisconsin took 2 nice Bull Elks during the 1st rifle season hunt, this was their first ever trip hunting on our South East Colorado Ranches. Populations of Elk and Deer continue to seem very healthy and balanced which should produce another good year for 2020. Book your hunts early.

Spring Gobbler season this year was excellent. We had a 100% success rate again on Merriam turkeys. We have some repeat hunters that have been with us for over 10 years! They keep coming back to enjoy hearing those Merriams gobble and take in the beautiful spring days. We had a couple of 1st time hunters take home some gobblers to finish up their Grand Slam. We did some trout fishing with the hunters and also made some tasty meals in the evening in Turkey Camp. We again helped one of our Ranchers for a couple hours one day do a Cattle Drive and vaccinate cattle in between hunting the turkeys.

What a sight, one group of hunters saw over 600 head of elk! Archery and Muzzle loading seasons had several close encounters and near misses! The Elk were there, but the hunters were struggling with shot placements, missing their target and most importantly not paying attention to the wind currents. Rifle season hunters did extremely well this year as they took 12 Elk and 3 mule deer during the rifle seasons. We had several 1st time hunters take their Elk and Deer and most of our repeat hunters were successful as they have figured out the hide out spots that the Elk and Deer use on the ranches we have. Thanks to great accommodations at Annette’s Ranch as our Hunters were all able to process their own Elk/Deer at camp. Deer hunters gave reports of more and more trophy Mulies showing up on our ranches this year. Elk numbers have been steadily increasing on a couple of our ranches due to the improvements that were made with the Rancher’s Alfalfa fields. We are currently booking hunts for 2019, don’t forget to book your hunt early.

Colorado Twin Peaks Private Ranches had a great time this spring helping turkey hunters on our ranches. We had several 1st time hunters that filled their tag. We also had some hunters finish up achieving the goal of getting their Grand Slam. Our repeat veteran hunters, that have hunted with us for many years in the Spring, filled their tags. We finished up the 3 day hunt with a 1/2 day fishing trip up to a high alpine lake and everyone caught their limit of Colorado trout. Our hunters gave us reports of seeing many Elk and Deer on our Ranches and some have booked hunts for Big Game this Fall.

2017 Elk/Deer Season Highlights: Archery and Muzzleloader hunters were busy this year trying to get in on the big Herd bull that kept giving them the slip. The Elk were using the alfalfa fields in early season. We had several misses and the muzzleloader group forgot to put a shot cap on and misfired on a big bull! They had an awesome hunt taking one nice bull, one hunter had several misses and one hunter hit a bull, but it got away. Rifle season we had hunters come in from Virginia, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Washington and WV. All the hunters had a great time. They saw lots of animals, including a mountain lion female and her 2 cubs. The 3 hunters from Minnesota tagged out on some really nice Mule Deer and Bob tagged out on his Elk. We had some 1st time hunters from Virginia and Tennessee take their elk. Tom’s son, Matt, USN, stationed on the USS Stennis in Washington State, took a really nice mule deer. Tom’s brother-in-law Craig, from New York State, made his first trip and made us a fantastic potato salad. Master Guide Carl continues to use his magic in drawing a Mule Deer tag and getting the largest Mule Deer of the season.
We will be at the SCI convention in Vegas in February 2018, visiting with some outfitters and Clients/Friends. We are looking forward to seeing all the new hunting gear and accessories that came out this past year. See you at the Show!

We finished up with 2017 Spring Gobbler Season at Colorado Twin Peaks Private Ranches. We had some great hunts, many memories and fellowship and last, but not least, harvested some really big Merriam Gobblers this year. We had hunters from Colorado, West Virginia, Missouri and Illinois. We had some 1st time hunters this year and enjoyed watching their excitement and nervousness during the hunt. Thanks to the great guides on the pro staff team, we sent all hunters home with their trophies. This year the gobblers couldn’t resist Doodle’s newest call the “Trex glass and Slate call.”
We had a great NWTF Banquet in Nashville, TN in February. We donated one 2018 Merriam Turkey hunt at the Banquet Dinner.

Several hunters chose to pass up on some smaller legal bulls during their hunt, waiting for a bigger bull. Our hunters did take 5 nice mule deer buck on our ranches. Antelope Hunting Colorado: We had 3 antelope rifle hunters in camp, all were family. All were successful. Carl and Jenny hunted with Jason Baudino on his property at 4 J Outfitters and were successful on the 1st day. Congrats to Carl and Jenny on your 1st antelope. Tom took his sister Tammy to one of his ranches for antelope and Tammy scored with her 1st ever antelope buck the 2nd day after an interesting stalking adventure. Way to go Tammy.

We had 9 hunters in camp trying for the Merriam Turkey on a 3 day do it yourself hunt along with a couple that was semi-guided. The 1st day of the hunt we took several nice toms. The 2nd day was snowed out as we had 14” of snow. The third day, Saturday was a great day, as we continued to fill all turkey tags. All hunters have booked for 2017 spring gobbler hunt, as they had a great time hunting with the Twin Peaks Team.

2015 Elk/Deer Season Highlights: Our Muzzleloader hunters took 2 nice bull elk. During the archery hunt, the hunters had a real nice bull getting in close one day, but unfortunately the cows picked up the hunters’ scent and moved him further away. Our Rifle hunters did well. Jim from New Jersey took his first ever elk with our guide Jason. Our other DIY hunters took 4 elk and 2 mule deer. Success continued with our next group of DIY hunters who took 3 bull elk and one hunter took a nice mule deer. We had one cow taken by a DIY hunter to finish up the rifle season. In late December, we had 1 cow hunter. Bruce from WV took his first ever Elk with Colorado Twin Peaks Private Ranches. Bruce had been watching a herd of over 200 elk all day and had to be careful not to shoot within the herd. Finally, in the evening, the herd was feeding and some wandered away. He was able to make a nice clean shot at 120 yards with his 300 Win Mag.

Antelope Hunting Colorado: We had 2 hunters book archery antelope hunts with Jason Baudino, who operates 4 J Outfitters. Marvin, from WV took his first antelope on the 2nd morning of the hunt. Marvin passed up several the first day of the hunt and took a great trophy. Congratulations, Marvin. This year Tom decided to crawl into a blind again for one day and try his luck. Tom harvested a real nice trophy buck that made Pope and Young. Tom spent most of his time up in the mountains on the private ranches scouting for elk/mule deer for his clients in the upcoming hunting seasons. Elk are starting to get into the rut and he spotted a nice elk herd that had well over a 100 head with some nice bulls.

Our first turkey hunters, harvested 3 beautiful birds. Our second group of 8 turkey hunters were also successful in harvesting their Merriam gobblers. Several of the gobblers were nice trophies. Brent from Nashville, TN, purchased the Colorado Twin Peaks Private Ranches donated turkey hunt at the annual NWTF banquet in February. He took his trophy gobbler on the 1st day and finished up his Grand Slam. Shawn, from WV, took his 1st Merriam and was so excited that he booked a hunt for next year. We had one bow hunter, Cody. Guides Brad and Les teamed up to help call Cody’s big gobbler within 10 yards for a clean shot. Congrats to Cody on your 1st gobbler with a bow. We had our usual 5 repeat hunters get their gobblers. After getting all the gobblers by the 2nd day, we took some to time to trout fish. We landed some nice rainbow trout that provided some delicious meals in turkey camp.

2014 Elk/Deer Season Highlights: Muzzleloader: We had a small group of DIY hunters that had a great time hunting elk. Ken from TN, took a very nice non-typical bull elk. One hunter missed a 110 yard shot and another hunter turned down a nice 6x6 at 17 yards for a bigger bull. But, the bull winded the hunter and both got away. Our archery hunters continue to see elk, but not within bow range.
Rifle Hunting in Colorado: One of our guided hunters, Steve from WV took a nice 7x7 bull on the 2nd day of the hunt. Our DIY hunters took 2 nice bulls, one scoring well over 300. Our next group of DIY hunters did well. Bobby, from WV continues to harvest an elk each year. He took a nice 6x6 bull scoring right at 300. John, from WV said he had beginner’s luck when he took a nice 5x5 bull. Carl, Joe and Derek, from WV, took 3 nice mule deer bucks. Joe, from WA, continues to take a bull, his 2nd year in a row. The small group from Kansas got a couple of nice mule deer bucks. A PA hunter took a nice bull elk. Jason also guided 2 hunters from CO who filled their tags with 2 cows.

Antelope Hunting Colorado: We had two hunters from TX for archery hunt. Mauro took his very first antelope, a nice buck on the 3rd day of the hunt. The other hunter had a couple of shots at antelope, but couldn’t connect. Tom, our owner, decided while waiting for his hunters, he would also try the blind for a few hours each day. Tom had several nice bucks come in to the blind, but he passed on them. Finally, at about 1 hour before dark, the big one came in. Tom miscalculated the distance and missed the shot. Better luck next year.

We had 9 hunters in camp last week from California to West Virginia to try their luck at Merriam turkey gobblers. All hunters were successful, for five of the hunters this was their first time hunting Merriams. One Client from Charleston WV, “Joe”, was the lucky hunter who had purchased the Colorado Twin Peaks Private Ranch’s donated turkey hunt thru our local chapter of the Potomac Headwaters of National Wild Turkey Federation. We also had Brad Mauzy, owner of “Doodle Calls”, hunting with us and he took his first Merriam Turkey using his hand made glass call and his slate calls. Brad is looking forward to helping us with guiding Turkey hunters in Future.
After the hunts, we went trout fishing for ½ day and each hunter caught their limit of trout. The main course for the evening meal consisted of Wild Turkey Breast and Trout fillets. Scouting reports for Elk and Deer were looking good again this spring with lush green grasses in the fields and pastures. We saw a lot of Bull Elk and Mule Deer Bucks just starting new antler growth. Colorado Twin Peaks Private Ranches is looking forward to helping its clients fulfill their dream of harvesting their Bull Elk and Mule Deer Buck this fall.

2013 Elk/Deer Season Highlights. We had some 1st time hunters this year and several of those hunters went home with some trophies to talk about and remember for a lifetime. We had a great kick off the season hunt with Archery Antelope hunt on our Ranches. We had 2 hunters along with outfitter Tom that hunted last week for a 3 day guided hunt overseen by our master Antelope guide Jason. Joe from Pennsylvania took a real nice trophy buck at 18 yards. Tom had troubles getting use to shooting from a blind as he had great opportunity at a Trophy Buck on the 2nd day at 18 yards, but ended up shooting under the buck. He did get his first Antelope with a bow on the 3rd day of the hunt, harvesting a nice buck at 35 yards. Bobby from WV had a lot of fun at spot and stalk after missing a trophy buck from the blind. Highlights from the Elk hunts were Nick from WV took big bull net score at 357 and Bobby from WV took his biggest Bull to date at 330 net score. Tom enjoyed with his daughter Jenny, as they both took two 6x6 bull elk. We had many other stories and successful hunters in camp this year. Start planning now for 2014 Season as some hunts have already been booked.

Final wrap up for the Spring Gobbler season had highlights of all hunters successful again, Derek from West Virginia took honors of bagging the largest gobbler that had 3 beards and weighed over 22 lbs. Master Guide Carl helped Derek on his hunt. All hunters did a ½ day fishing trip up to a high alpine lake and were successful taking their limit on lake Trout. We scouted a couple of our Ranches during the turkey hunt and we saw the most elk that we have ever seen in the first 11 years we have hunted in the area. The fall elk season should be excellent for our hunters that booked with Colorado Twin Peaks Private Ranches.

2012 Elk/Deer Rifle Season’s Highlights: We had hunters hunting all 4 rifle seasons. They took some really nice Bull Elk and the Deer hunters had a great time taking some nice Mule Deer Bucks. Joe from Washington was hanging out for the big Trophy bull and had been passing up smaller bulls during the week, one evening the big 350+ bull came out to a water hole at 120 yards. Joe took the shot but shot right over the back and the bull got away. Better luck next year Joe, that bull is still there and will only get bigger. We had a Mule Deer hunter hunting our ranch on the Uncompahgre Platu area for a Big Mule Deer and had excellent hunt taking nice Buck.
